How to top up a plastic T-money card
- 1Get Korean won in cash
Cash is the surest way to top up a plastic T-money card. Foreign credit cards often don't work for this.
- 2Convenience store counter or subway machine
At a store, hand over the card and say the amount. At a station, use the card reload machine.
- 3Top up the night before
Our tip: add the next day's fares at a store near your hotel so you never get stuck at the bus door.
On the bus
- CASH-FREESome Seoul buses take no cash
Seoul has been expanding 'cash-free buses' (현금 없는 버스), so don't count on paying the driver in bills.
현금 없는 버스 - TAG OFFTap your card when you get off too
Tapping off is how transfer discounts are counted, and it's when the low-balance warning plays.

Local tips
- Our tip: one card per person. Sharing a card breaks transfer discounts.
- Our tip: keep a ₩10,000 note for top-ups; many visitors get stuck only because they have no cash.
- Fares, passes and payment options can change; check at the station before you buy.
